Here's Why You Should Consider Traveling After a Breakup
Breakups are something we will experience at some point in our lives — whether it be a friend breakup or a separation from a romantic partner. The decision to split from someone after spending any amount of time with them can be difficult.
One day you’re planning your life with someone, the next, you’re learning how to navigate being single again. It is natural to go through feelings of grief, loneliness or anger after a breakup. No matter who initiates the separation it can emotionally affect all parties involved.
There is no set amount of time to grieve a relationship, however, these emotions aren’t met to stay forever. After taking some time to do some soul-searching you may find yourself wanting to heal from the hurt. Throwing away photos, deleting text messages and blocking them on social media are great first steps. But, have you considered travel as a healing strategy?
Taking vacations or retreats away can add light to a dreary situation and be a great way to overcome the hardships associated with no longer being with your partner.
Though all of your feelings won’t magically disappear, travel can offer some temporary relief and post-breakup clarity.
If you’re experiencing a breakup, here are some ways traveling can be restorative for you:
Traveling Can Help You Process Your Breakup
When relationships come to an end, sometimes rebounding with a new partner or working our way through it seems easier. However, moving on with acknowledgment never actually helps you start your healing journey. When you decide to travel, it gives you space to process your new normal.
Processing may look different for everyone. You may want to take a long road trip away from your place of residence and think about what happened. Or, you can sit in your hotel room and journal about your experience. Whatever processing looks like for you, make sure it is a healthy way of coping.
Processing the breakup can also help you determine possible areas of improvement. Relationships aren’t perfect. Maybe one or both parties made mistakes. As you travel you have time to relax and think about the course of the relationship. What do you want to do differently next time? How can you begin to become a better version of yourself? As you regroup during your vacation or retreat, you can figure out how you can become and attract a better partner.
Create New Memories In A New Environment
Changing your space can be beneficial for breakup recovery. After having memories with a person, it can be overwhelming to revisit certain locations or environments. As you leave your normal environment, visiting new locations can help you create new experiences. This will help you not dwell on the past. As you interact with new spaces, you have something to look forward to.
While in a relationship, a lot of your time is spent with the other person. If you’re in a new state, country or continent, traveling will expose you to new things to do in your free time. You might've had favorite activities or places to go to. Those things don’t have to end with the relationship. You can learn how to spend time with yourself and make new memories to find peace and joy.
Build A Sisterhood By Meeting New People
After a breakup, it's easy to believe that there is no one else who you will connect with. But, that's a myth! You haven’t met all the people who will love you.
When you travel outside of your comfort zone, you can come in contact with people from all walks of life. Whether you decide to travel solo or with a friend group, you can explore different perspectives and gain insight into the season that you’re in.
Meeting new people doesn’t have to be exclusive to starting a new romantic relationship. Gathering amongst a community is a great way to understand that you are not alone. Other women with similar experiences can offer advice, tips and companionship as you navigate this tough time.
